Known hazards

The Aramoho Whanganui and Whanganui Collegiate Rowing Club site is one of Whanganui’s most prominent locations for rowing and water-based sports. With a long history of fostering athletic excellence, both clubs have been home to numerous national and international rowing champions. Located along the serene Whanganui River, the site boasts excellent facilities, including boat sheds, launching ramps, and training areas tailored for rowers of all levels.
The site’s central position on the river allows for easy access to stretches of water ideal for training and competition. Beyond its sporting reputation, this site is also a key community gathering point, promoting camaraderie, teamwork, and respect for the awa. The club works closely with other river users and organisations to ensure safety and sustainability, adhering to the principles of Te Awa Tupua. Recently waka ama have also started to also use this site due to its prime location to the race course and excellent facilities.
Visitors are reminded to respect the club’s facilities and observe all safety protocols when using the river in this area. Boats have priority in this area but must adhere to directionality rules (keep right when passing, or approaching an oncoming vessel).
The site is not intended for casual swimming, and river users should be aware of the strong currents, a steep drop off, and potential hazards such as debris lying under the surface.
