The Whanganui Marina is in the central city part of the Awa and has strong historical significance. Nearby, the iconic paddle steamer Waimarie departs on scheduled trips, providing a living link to the days when the river was a vital transport corridor between Whanganui and the upriver settlements. This area also plays a central role in the river’s present-day use – catering to private boats, and recreational fishing along the final leg of the Mountains to Sea shared pathway.

Its central location means it is easily accessible, with nearby cafes, the Whanganui i-SITE, and walking/cycling trails. While the marina is a fantastic place to enjoy the river, users should remain aware of tide conditions, submerged structures, pedestrians and cyclists along the shared pathway as well as fishing lines being cast.
