The Whanganui Rowing Association coordinates events and advocates for the needs of local rowers, supporting a collaborative and inclusive environment.

Located on the Whanganui River, the city of Whanganui has a long tradition of rowing that dates back to the 19th century. Early settlers quickly recognised the river’s value not only for transportation but also for sport and recreation. By the 1870s, local newspapers reported on informal races and boat-building contests, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for rowing. As the city grew, so did its involvement in the sport, and rowing clubs began to form, bringing together community members and encouraging local competition.

The founding of the Union Boat Club in 1877 was a turning point for rowing in Whanganui. This club, established by a group of enthusiasts, provided a centre for both social and competitive rowing. It was soon followed by the creation of other clubs, including the Aramoho Rowing Club in 1904, which helped solidify Whanganui’s reputation in New Zealand rowing. Over the decades, these clubs have trained athletes who have gone on to compete nationally and internationally. Annual regattas became important events, attracting participants and spectators from across the region and fostering strong ties between clubs. Throughout the years, Whanganui’s rowing community adapted to changes in equipment and coaching, maintaining a balance between established traditions and new developments.

Today, rowing is still an active and well-supported sport in Whanganui. The Union Boat Club and Aramoho Whanganui Rowing Club continue to serve the local community, offering coaching for beginners and experienced rowers alike, and organising competitions. These clubs run programmes for young athletes, partner with schools, and support high-performance training. School teams from Whanganui Collegiate, Wanganui High School, and other institutions help introduce new participants to the sport, ensuring its continued growth. The Whanganui Rowing Association coordinates events and advocates for the needs of local rowers, supporting a collaborative and inclusive environment. Through these clubs and organisations, rowing remains an important part of Whanganui’s sporting life and community identity.
